Project Management Professional Certification Requirements

There are PMP certification requirements that you must meet before you can obtain your credential. Your education plays an important role on deciding what your PMP certification requirements will be. You will need more or less project management experience depending on your education and all experience must be gained during the last 8 years before submitting an application.

PMP Certification Requirements for high school diploma, AA degree or global equivalent.

You will need at least 5 years (60 months) of unique non-overlapping project management experience where a minimum of 7500 hours were used to lead and direct project tasks. You will also need 35 contact hours of formal project management education.

PMP Certification Requirements for bachelor's degree or global equivalent.

If you have a bachelor's degree, you will need a minimum of 3 years (36 months) unique non-overlapping project management experience including 4500 hours of leading and directing project tasks. 35 contact hours of formal Project Management Education is also required.

Educational requirements for PMP certification can be satisfied by successfully completing courses, workshops, and training sessions offered by one or more of the following types of providers. One hour of approved classroom instruction equals one contact hour.

  • PMI Registered Education Providers (R.E.P)*
  • PMI Component organizations*
  • Employer/company-sponsored programs
  • Training companies or consultants
  • Distance-learning companies, including an end-of-course assessment
  • University/college academic and continuing education programs


*Courses offered by PMI R.E.P.s, PMI Components (chapters, specific interest groups, colleges) or PMI are preapproved for contact hours in fulfillment of the educational eligibility requirement.

The following types of education do not meet PMP Certification requirements for contact hours.

  • PMI chapter meetings*
  • Self directed learning such as reading books, watching videos, or sessions with coaches or mentors


*If at least one hour of a chapter meeting is spent conducting a learning activity, the hour(s) spent in that activity can be counted towards the educational eligibility requirements for PMP certification .
